Air-Source Heat Pumps
ENERGY STAR qualified air-source heat pumps are 20% more efficient than standard
new models and 20 - 50 % more efficient than older models.
Facts and Product Knowledge:
- ENERGY STAR qualified air-source heat pumps have a seasonal efficiency rating (SEER) of 14 or greater and a heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF) of 8, (8.2 for split systems) or greater. The higher the SEER and the HSPF rating the more efficient the air source heat pump.
- ENERGY STAR qualified air-source heat pumps have an energy efficiency ratio (EER) of 11 (11.5 for split systems) or greater.
- Proper sizing is critical for efficient operation and maximum comfort.
- Air-source heat pumps use the difference between outdoor air temperatures and indoor air temperatures to cool and heat your home.
The NY Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program utilizes Building Performance
Institute (BPI) Accredited Contractors for the installation of ENERGY STAR
products and services. They are trained and certified in proper installation
techniques to ensure the consumer receives the full benefit of their investment.
Tips:
- Identify BPI Accredited contractors who are knowledgeable about product and installation of ENERGY STAR qualified air-source heat pumps.
- Have heat pumps serviced and cleaned by a BPI Accredited contractor annually to maintain system performance.
- Use programmable thermostats.
- Consider having a comprehensive home assessment performed by a participating BPI Accredited Home Performance contractor who can identify and repair a variety of home energy efficiency problems, including poor insulation and air leaks which reduce the performance of home cooling and heating equipment.
