Geothermal heat pump systems can harvest this energy during the following winter to provide comfort in both residential and commercial buildings. They can also provide cooling during summer. This full day seminar covers the fundamentals of geothermal heat pump technology. It discusses water-to-air, water-to-water, and direct expansion heat pumps, and shows several ways to apply them in both forced air and hydronic applications. It also covers design of both horizontal and vertical geothermal loop systems. State of the art technology for minimizing parasitic operating cost in geothermal systems also is presented. Topics presented include:•Overview of a heat pump technology•Water-to-air heat pumps – construction and refrigerant cycle•Water-to-water heat pumps – construction and refrigerant cycle•Thermal performance characteristics of ground source heat pump•Heat emitter options for water-to-water ground source heat pump systems•Performance comparison of ground source heat pump with other options•On-site thermal performance assessment of GSHP systems•Horizontal and vertical earth loop options•Sizing closed loop earth heat exchangers•Sizing software demonstrationNumber of Days: 1Price: $300 (Most participants qualify for a scholarship reducing course fees to $150 for employed and $15 for unemployed)Certification: 7 PDH, .7 CEURegistered Students: 0Max Students: 32 The RETC is funded through a $2 million grant awarded under the Presidents Community-based Job Training Grants, as implemented by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration. This workshop presents several simple tools for evaluating options in areas of energy conservation and fuel choice. It begins with what is often the most cost effective option – conservation. The basics of building heat loss are discussed and quantified. From there discussion turns to tools for estimating heat cost, and making comparisons between fuel options. Each attendee will receive a CD with software for heating load estimating and fuel cost comparison. Each attendee will also receive a Kill-a-watt meter for monitoring energy use of appliances. Topics presented include:• The basics of heat flow in building• R-value and how to deal with it• Comparisons of insulation options• Air leakage, estimating losses, finding leaks, and reducing leaks• Comparing fuel options – unit price of heat supplied• Estimating annual heating costs using degree-day method• Interpreting utility bills• Current incentives for energy conservation• Resources for additional information• Using the software provided• Using the Kill-a-watt meterNumber of Days: 1Price: $125 (Most participants qualify for a scholarship reducing course fees to $62.50 for employed and $6.25 for unemployed)Certification: 3.5 PHD, .35 CEU The RETC is funded through a $2 million grant awarded under the Presidents Community-based Job Training Grants, as implemented by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration.
